Bible quotes, idolatry and blasphemy Empty Bible quotes, idolatry and blasphemy

Post by seekerjuan Tue May 26, 2009 10:03 am

The other day I was reading some blogs about fundamentalists issues with current events. One poster pointed out that presuming to speak for God, using the Bible, was blasphemy. After a little reflection I could see his point.

wikipedia wrote:
Blasphemy: The act of claiming the attributes or prerogatives of deity.
Those who claim judgment on others through the use of Bible quotes do exactly this. But, I think the harm goes much deeper.
wikipedia wrote:
Idolatry: Idolatry is usually defined as worship of any cult image, idea, or object, as opposed to the worship of a monotheistic God. Blind or excessive devotion to something such as a graven image or other human work.

So, those who profess a work of man, the Bible, to be divine, i.e. the inerrant word of God, by definition commit idolatry. In addition, to use this work of man to claim to speak for God, is blasphemy.

I have been to a few of these evangelical prayer meetings, and I have to admit, they look a lot like mass demon possession to me. Incoherent babbling, falling and flopping on the floor, etc. All reminds me of a scene from "The Exorcist." In fact, if you try to talk to some of these folks and explain your view, they become absolutely nasty and claim you are from the anti-Christ.

Another issue I see, is the complete disregard for The Father. It's all about 'Jesus'. I thought Jesus came to proclaim the promise of the Father? They seem to be making a idol of Jesus, himself.

Do you think I am off base here? Is it possible, that these people are possessed? Is it possible, that they are committing idolatry with the Bible and the name of Jesus? Is it possible to help them without judging them?

I think you are "right on" the mark!

My book title says the same, i.e. Church of God ? or the Temples of Satan!

Bible quotes, idolatry and blasphemy Empty Re: Bible quotes, idolatry and blasphemy

Post by StarSeeker Wed Jun 24, 2009 4:40 am

I just got back from a christian retreat. I was the only Gnostic there. All I heard was truth from their lips, but all I saw were liars and idolaters. We had a group meeting where I stated I thought we 'ought' not 'ought'. To which they all agreed and proceed accomplishing their agenda. I smiled as I left the room.

I don't think you can help them without judging them, if they are not judged, they (by definition) wouldn't need any help. Mostly I try to stay out of other peoples business. How am I supposed to know if they are talking about the same thing I am talking about? I would not go so far as to claim I have all the answers because I experienced the light, and I am very capable of judging them, but it is not for me to do. When the Omega comes, we all judge ourselves.

However, I should say that I agree with you both.

Is the best way to witness to be a seeker and nothing more? Or would it be better to claim that Gnosis sets you free and to be uninterested in the salvation of others? These are questions that may not have answers...

As I have continued my path since the original post, I am beginning to see that it is best to not concern myself with the mistakes of others. Basically, my search is between the Father and myself. Judging others and concern for what others believe, is a distraction from my own path. In essence, I am allowing the other into my personal space, which should be reserved for my own experience with/as the Father. The best way to help them is to demonstrate peace and love in my own life by strengthening my own inward relationship with the Father. (First remove the beam from your own eye...)

For my own personal belief, salvation is the last hope of those who do not achieve true knowledge of the promise of the Father before they die. It may or may not be a reality, but it provides hope for those who are too preoccupied with the affairs and agendas of this world to seek the true knowledge of the Father inside themselves.

Bible quotes, idolatry and blasphemy Empty Re: Bible quotes, idolatry and blasphemy

Post by Thoughts01 Fri Jul 17, 2009 9:56 am

Hi guys, I'm back again. Sorry for the absence...

I go thru this everyday with Fundamentalist, while trying to abide by my own personal convictions, I'd like to offer these small tidbits from what is tenatively titled "The Sentences of Sextus" from the Nag Hammadi Library. Suggestions set down long ago, but rarely heeded...

(164b) While it is a skill to speak, it is also a skill to be silent.

(160) May the right time precede your words.
(161/162) Speak when it is not proper to be silent, but speak concerning the things you know (only) then when it is fitting.
(163a) The untimely word is characteristic of an evil mind.
(163b) When it is proper to act, do not use a word.
(164a) Do not wish to speak first in the midst of a crowd.

(350) Do not give the word of God to everyone.

Quite a bit of wisdom there, but this runs into direct conflict with the way Evangilical Christianity is run. Ever ready to give battle to ANYONE they deem offensive.

As most of you know I'm on a local community board here in Paulding County Georgia. Heart of the Evangelical Kingdom of Conservitive Christianity. The blind and the deaf rule here and any difference in Christianity or ANY religion is not tolerated and immediately set upon. This is from one thread that started out innocently enough...

Bishop Shelby Spong is a progressive christian. If you recognize his name you'll know exactly what I am speaking of. I would love to find a progressive church close to home.

The anwsers...

Let's see... Newbie comes on with differening religious beliefs and ask if anybody knows where a church of his beliefs can be located...

The responses...

QUOTE
Please understand that in no sense of "true" Christianity should Spong's name be associated. His teachings are exactly that. HIS. Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all His righteousness.........................Don't seek Spong.

QUOTE
Spong is a flaming liberal who takes bits and pieces of the Bible, mixes in his personal beliefs, and has created a designer religion from it. What he "preaches" is not Christianity, he even disputes the virgin birth and the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.

QUOTE
Oh....you mean "feel good" religion?

Sorry but without a supreme being it isn't a religion, it's a social club.

Carry on

QUOTE
John 4:1 "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

QUOTE
"Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name ... and will deceive many' (Matthew 24:4-5).

"Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the traditions of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ" -Colossians 2:8; Mark 7:8-9, 13.

"I urge you, brothers and sisters, to keep an eye on those who cause dissensions and offenses, in opposition to the teaching that you have learned; avoid them. For such people do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded. For while your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want you to be wise in what is good and guileless in what is evil" -Romans 16:17-19.

"But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed"-Galatians 1: 8-9.

"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves" -Matthew 7:15

"The coming of the lawless one [a future teacher who will advocate doctrines contrary to God's laws] is according to the working of Satan ... with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie" -2 Thessalonians 2:9-11

"You also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness" - Matthew 23:28

QUOTE
well, where did Christ come from? was he just a good man? or is He the son of God? the answer to that question

is whats important! my opinion if you deny the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, you can't be a

christian, that is what christianity based on!

I'll try to link the thread, but I don't know if it will work. If it ask you for a forum password, it's "ON"...

I can't resist...

I would apply each and every one of these quotes to the fundamentalists I have met.

There is an old saying. A xstian is only nice to you because he/she thinks they will be rewarded by their god. An atheist will be nice to you simply to be nice... The atheist is your true friend.

The only thing we can hope is that in a few generations, this brand of bigotry .. ahh .. 'religion' will die out.

Talk about pots and kettles...
