New Swedenborgian mystic from Kansas, US

Post by MysticQuest on Fri May 30, 2008 1:05 am

I had my first spiritual experience 25 years ago and have been a contemplative mystic up until recently when I was called to become active.

I've studied Swedenborg for years and am a member of the New Church. More recently, I began study of the Catholic mystics and have realized that God is operating through these people and many others to lead to a Universal religion based on love of God and charity to the neighbor.

My context is Christianity but I use Buddhist meditation techniques and am open to any active or contemplative technique that will help me realize my potential.

I hope to connect with other mystics to share experiences and world views. Once, I was told that enlightenment is obtained with reasoning with others. There's a bigger picture out there God is painting for us and I believe we can see it together.

My wish is that my understanding of Swedenborg's work adds something to the forum. There are not many of us, but we are all enlightened to some degree.

I don't 'work' so am available at anytime via IM.

Blessings,
Dave

sopherim,

Swedenborg's works do take some getting used to. He wrote in latin and many of the older translations are difficult to understand at first. I know it was for me. Until I read the newer translations was I able to grasp the core concepts.

The work most start off with is Heaven and Hell. The most recent translation is the New Century translation available HERE in pdf format. Also, on my website, there is a link for heavenlydoctrines.org which is a searchable database of all his writings. They also have some starting points by topic.

Hope this helps

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome!

Dave

Hi Dave,

Welcome and thanks for the link.

I have tried to read Swedenborg before, but like fellow Scandinavian Soren Kiekegaard is very difficult to read although both are rewarding if you have determination (but as you can see from my screen name, I am somewhat lazy). But you are right, this translation is quite readable. I shall give go away and see more fully what Emmanuel has to say about heaven and hell and other things. Not that anyone needs to be explained what hell is like, but I can't remember heaven all that well Wink .

Peace,
Mark

Blessings, Dave, and welcome to the group!

I haven't heard of Swedenborg before (tho I have read Kiekegaard, good stuff!) but thanks for the link, will peruse it soon.
