About aeons

Post by Storyteller on Sat Dec 22, 2007 7:32 am

What is aeon?

Or should I rephrase this question as who is aeon?

It sometimes to be a god or emanation of a deity. But it sometimes seems to
mean a place, eg. heaven. Sort of like the Greek Hades. Hades can be referred
to as the god of the dead, but it could be the world of the dead, netherworld
or Underworld.

Hi!

I thought an aeon was a time-period of about 1000 years...?

According to Wikipedia:

IN GNOSTICISM

In many Gnostic systems, the various emanations of God, who is also known by such names as the One, the Monad, Aion teleos (The Perfect Aeon), Bythos (Depth or profundity, Greek Βυθός), roarkhe (Before the Beginning, Greek πρόαρχή), the Arkhe (The Beginning, Greek ή αρχή), are called aeons. This first being is also an æon and has an inner being within itself, known as Ennoea (Thought), Charis (Grace), or Sige (Greek Σιγη, Silence). The split perfect being conceives the second aeon, Caen (Power), within itself. Along with the male Caen comes the female æon Akhana (Truth, Love).

Aeons bear a number of similarities to Judaeo-Christian angels, including their roles as servants and emanations of God, and their existence as beings of light. In fact, certain Gnostic Angels, such as Armozel, also happen to be Aeons.

The aeons often came in male/female pairs called syzygies, and were frequently numerous (20-30). Two of the most commonly listed æons were Jesus and Sophia. The aeons constitute the pleroma, the "region of light." The lowest regions of the pleroma are closest to the darkness — that is, the physical world.

When an æon named Sophia emanates without her partner aeon, the result is the Demiurge, or half-creator (Occasionally referred to as 'Yalda Baoth in Gnostic texts), a creature that should never have come into existence. This creature does not belong to the pleroma, and the One emanates two savior æons, Christ and the Holy Spirit, to save humanity from the Demiurge. Christ then took the form of the human Jesus, in order to be able to teach humanity how to achieve gnosis; that is, return to the pleroma.

Myther and others suggest that the whole mechanism can be an allegorical representation of violation of CP symmetry, required to create a universe of matter, by facilitating particles to win over antiparticles. CP symmetry requires emanation of equal amount of matters and antimatters which obviously has been violated somehow in the beginning of the universe; otherwise we would not have a material universe. Æons may denote this conjugation of particles-antiparticles produced in equal number. Somehow the perfect symmetry of Pleroma gets violated and a particle or a number of particles (Sophia) ensued out without its/their antiparticle counterparts, resulting in an increase in number of particles (birth of Demiurge) – a process which ultimately led to the creation of our physical universe.

The Gnostic Gospel of Judas, recently found, purchased, held, and translated by the National Geographic Society, also mentions the aeons and speaks of Jesus' teachings of them.

Hi

Actually aeon referred to time being un-countable. Try tens of million of years or billions of years.

Hi

Oh. I almost associated to the old Zodiac. You know, where each sign is about 2000 years. But that's Ages . The "Age of Pisces" (began with Jesus approxiamately.) and the "Age of Aquarius" having just begun, I think.

No, Aeons is a new thing to me. I'll have to read. (Cosmology is difficult. It takes a long time to "paint the whole picture". And I'm not familiar with the Gnostic terminology. Terminologies are always different. And language used too.)

greetings and Merry Christmas,
BB

Have you read this thread (CLICK HERE)? I think you will find it very interesting. We are fortunate to have Chukuma here, he knows a great deal about Astrology.

Yes, I also know very little of the technical / intellectual / theoretical side of Gnosis. But it is the EXPERIENCE itself which is ALL IMPORTANT.

Hey, ABS. Aeons are said to be the 7 planetary angels (Elohim)--Simon Magus was quoted by Hippolytus in his work - Philosophumena). The 7 are represented by the 7 character name ABRAXAS, which I synonimize with the androgynous/male-female creators known as Elohim. This idea echoes that of the Shabaka Stone inscription (5000 BC/BCE) and is retold in the story of Noah and the flood. The name Noah consists of 2 Hebrew letters, Nun and Khet. Nun is the primeval waters (unformed matter/energy) of creation. The tale of Noah is that of a cosmology. The 8 (4 male and 4 female) on the ark are the Hermopolitian Ogdoad (Het-Ka-Ptah/Mennefer/Memphis, Egypt). The ark is really the boat of Ra, which carried 9. The 9th member is identified as Canaan (Ham's son) Genesis 9:25 who is suddenly mentioned in place of Ham (note: there was no mention of his birth taking place on the boat but yet he is mentioned as if he is present). 9 is the mystic number of incarnation. Spirit manifesting in the form of matter.

Hi! That rhymes very well with me. In the (very unknown) teaching I study, called the Fourth Way we speak of 7 planetary body types.

I strongly believe what you are speaking of is related to (or is the same as in) this teaching.

I must go to work. (I don't really want to, but I have to.)
Talk more later!

Hello, BB. I am not surprised that this is so. The truth found in all religions can be traced backed to Kmt (Egypt).

Augustine:

That which is known as the Christian religion existed among the ancients, and never did not exist; from the very beginning of the human race until the time when Christ came in the flesh, at which time the true religion which already existed, began to be called Christianity. - Retractt. I, xiii.

Naturally, that which is called Christianity today is a horrible representation of that which has always existed.

Hi, BB. Thank you for the links. I'll likely look further into the first one. The second has what seems to be a voluminous amount of material, a lot which looks very familiar. I'll look at that link in greater detail as time permits. Thanks again.

I know this is off-topic, but I have never understood this "Age of Aquarius" thing.

Can you explain what age this refer to? Perhaps, you can IM me your explanation.

Greetings Chukuma,
In the following you write...

The truth found in all religions can be traced backed to Kmt (Egypt).

Are you at all familiar with the writings of Gerald Massey. He was especially of the same mind that all religions can be traced back to ancient Egypt. He wrote a superb book called "Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World" Are you familiar with that?

Augustine:

That which is known as the Christian religion existed among the ancients, and never did not exist; from the very beginning of the human race until the time when Christ came in the flesh, at which time the true religion which already existed, began to be called Christianity. - Retractt. I, xiii.

A sad fact, but oh so true. No

Peace always.
